Summary

As alcohol-related problems continue to grow it is important, now more than ever, that advertisers ensure they create socially responsible marketing campaigns. This comprehensive seminar will take a close look at the Advertising Codes and the issues impacting on the alcohol sector. It will also provide an overview of how other types of marketing communications are controlled by The Portman Group, including sponsorship and labelling.

Description

Alcohol advertising has come under intense scrutiny in recent years, with increasing concern about the effects of alcohol on society. In 2005 the advertising self-regulatory system responded to that concern by strengthening the rules surrounding the marketing of alcoholic drinks. The rules are aimed at ensuring alcohol ads do not associate with or reflect youth culture; encourage irresponsible or dangerous behaviour; link alcohol with seduction or sexual success. The alcohol advertising rules have been developed to make certain that alcohol is marketed responsibly.

As the independent regulator, the ASA works to keep standards high by enforcing the mandatory UK Advertising Codes, written by the Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP/BCAP), and by monitoring compliance.  ASA and CAP/BCAP also invest great effort in training and guidance to prevent breaches and help advertisers get their ads right first time.
